Shiners attending the AWS Summit 2024 held in Sydney last week noted the apparent widespread adoption of Generative AI and machine learning technologies across the AWS ecosystem. All across the conference and expo events, seemingly every developer, innovator and customer was showcasing or talking about how they are implementing these transformative technologies for practical real-world innovations.
In this article, some of Shine’s leading talent from our Migration and Modernisation practice share the interesting observations they made while attending the Summit, and recommend key presentations you might like to catch up with from the on-demand AWS Summit site.
Aaron Brown, a leading Principal Engineer based in Sydney, observed, “With the launch of the AWS fully-managed Bedrock service of high-performing AI foundation models in the Sydney region, there was of course a particular focus on GenAI. While there were a number of presentations on PoCs and what could or might be done in the future, one of the more interesting talks was “Defence in depth: Securely building a multi-tenant generative AI service”, which outlined the lengths that AWS goes to in order to guarantee that customer data doesn’t cross tenancies or into the training set.”
Innovative Analyst Software Engineer, Raimee Abbassi, explained her key take away from the event was “a deeper appreciation of the transformative power of AI and machine learning. Importantly, AWS is aiming to democratise AI technologies by providing free AI skills training to two million people by 2025 and making it more accessible to developers and businesses on a global scale. This commitment to training underscores a significant investment in the future workforce, to prepare us for an AI-driven world where technological advancements must align with ethical considerations and the principles of long-term sustainability.”

Another of Shine’s top Analyst Software Engineers, Joy Quiwa, was similarly “fascinated with how widely and rapidly Gen AI is being adopted and incorporated into so many of the solutions I saw demonstrated by AWS partners.”
Joy added, “While I have always been cautious in my attitude towards GenAI, the Summit has accentuated how broadly it can be put to use. Some use cases made me think about intellectual property rights and what becomes of the billions of pieces of content that get created? Others make me appreciate the automation they allow for technology practitioners to speed up and improve work quality.
While Gen AI was the ‘bedrock’ of the Summit, my personal highlights were breakout sessions that encouraged me to not lose sight of security and resilience in whatever solutions I work on. ‘Resilient architectures at scale: Real-world use cases from Amazon.com’ and ‘Essential security practices for your software development lifecycle’ emphasised the ongoing work of enhancing the security and resilience of architectures.”
Shine’s recently appointed Program Manager for Migration and Modernisation, Erika Bell, was “inspired by two keynote presentations that were thought provoking and practical, with actionable insights that could be applied to almost any business capability. First, Swimming Australia’s Head of Performance Insights and Olympic Campaign Lead shared how they have achieved unprecedented results in medley racing by seamlessly embedding real-time data insights into their model for coaching and optimising team performance.
Second, the Chief Work Futurist from Atlassian highlighted how a key future-work mindset shift is a focus on the actual business outcomes achieved rather than mere project outputs. This aligns well with the approach our MigMod team at Shine applies to the Assess Phase of each of our migration and modernisation projects: always framing each of our conversations, workshops, analysis and value delivered, from the point of view of the customer. Start with the outcomes for the customer and work back from there.”

Shine’s Sydney-based Business Development Manager, Nathan Gazzard noted “how AWS emphasised the value of leveraging the specialist expertise of multiple partners who can bring complimentary skills to your own organisation’s talent. With Shine’s 26 years of consulting experience, we’ve established a reputation with large enterprises, the public sector, and also AWS ProServ, for being a trusted and pragmatic advisor and implementer who partners cohesively with other experts. Shine and AWS share a key cultural alignment around the value of true collaboration.”
Finally, long standing industry veteran and Shine CTO, Luke Alexander, highlighted how “the rapid pace of innovation at AWS demands constant learning and adaptation in order to stay at the forefront of technology. At Shine, part of the critical value we deliver to our clients is being able to provide pragmatic and realistic recommendations about how to rapidly and safely extract genuine business value from the latest innovations, without being overwhelmed by the hype and complexity. AWS Summit was yet another outstanding AWS learning opportunity for our leading cloud experts at Shine.”
