The technology we build today determines the world we live in tomorrow. But if that world is being built under the leadership of a limited portion of our community, how well can it enable the diversity and equality essential to creating a fairer future enjoyed by everyone?
At Shine we believe diversity of participation in the technology sector is essential to creating a more empathetic, innovative and equal world. To achieve it we actively seek diversity in our recruitment, across all spectrums. This includes a particular drive to increase female participation in software engineering.
To expand our support for more women to build careers in tech, Shine has become a major financial sponsor of Code Like a Girl: a social enterprise which provides girls and women with the confidence, tools, knowledge and support needed to enter and flourish in the world of coding.
Code Like A Girl is a community of women and girls inspired by technology, hungry to grow their coding skills and share it with others by offering education and promoting industry internships and employment opportunities.
Shine actively supports this mission with major financial sponsorship and participation in Code Like a Girl’s key programmes.
Shine founder and CEO, Mark Johnson explained “Diversity is really important to us, not least because the customers of our clients are diverse. It’s integral to have different insights, experiences and opinions contributing to how to make things better. While we have a highly diverse workforce – and a female participation rate higher than average in software engineering – we’ve still got a long way to go to achieve complete equality. That’s why it’s important to support community initiatives like Code Like a Girl.”
